 SUNSET SESSIONS

CONCEPT

For me, music is all about the intimate moments. The moments you create when you listen to your favorite song, the way it can enhance the moments in your life to create a certain kind of magic and elevate the ordinary.

I want to capture this feeling by shooting and recording artists performing based around the idea of sunset - capturing the fleeting feeling of the magic hour of the day. Bringing together intimate performance, beautiful lighting and timless music to capture and create that magic.

STORY

We’ll focus on building a story around each artist, beginning with an on camera interview and shoot them as they interact with the space and environment. Letting them speak about how they find inspiration and carry that through to the later hours.

PERFORMANCE

We’ll then move into a performance video where we film them performing a track in an intamate and awe inspiring setting. The lighting, tone, and vibe will carry through the theme of sunset through colour, tone and vibe.

The camera movement will be soft and floating, filmed on vintage prime lenses, cinema cameras and shot on a steadicam. The video will be music video / commercial quality, but of a live session.

Some will be bright with rays of fading orange light, others pink hued for early twilight mirroring the sky just after the sun has gone down. Others can be darker almost at night with the final rays just kissing the set. They can be inside, or outdoors on location.

VIDEO REFERENCES

01. Look & feel of 16mm / Candid moments

02. One take live session / Singing to backing track

03. Use of space & location (Disregard the high crane shot and balloon past 1:30)

04. Looping film clips

STILL PHOTOGRAPHY

After we record the performance, we’ll take time to photograph each artist so we have original stills to go along with each video.

We can also pull still frames and loops from the 16mm film footage that can be posted and shared to help promote and lead up to each video release.

We’ll carry the aesthetic feel of each video through to the photography so the video and stills all tie together seamlessly.

DESIGN

We’ll create a unique visual identity to go along with the videos so we can fully control the graphic voice from end to end. The feel will be raw, analog and timeless.

Think filmic fonts and textures, old slides, faded posters, analog oscillator waveforms, and dusty negatives.

We’ll also create a unique t-shirt and poster design to be released with each video. Sales from this merchandise will go towards supporting the artist featured in the video.

We’ll collaborate with Public Possession on the branding, posters, and t-shirt designs.

PRODUCTION

To film these safely and maintain physical distancing we’ll strip the production down to a micro crew, and have just who we need on set with fully safety protocols in place.

To keep the performance safe and nimble, we’ll pair down the full band to essential elements. Rather than having everyone perform, we can have the lead singer sing along to just one or two instruments, or even give thought to singing live to a backing track.

A more unplugged version of the song will also help fit in with the atmosphere we’re creating, and help craft a unique voice for the series that we can make our own, and that fans can’t get elsewhere.
